When it comes to food, it makes perfect sense not to cut corners, as we are dealing with daily sustenance here. But living in these times when it has almost become a necessity to make a budget on everything, it makes just as much sense to scrimp a bit on our food-spending.

But it’s not about starving yourself to death as you sit mesmerized in front of your living room gel fireplace. It’s just about spending more wisely on food without having to compromise nutrition. Here are some tips on cooking on a budget:

Cook the right portions. Nothing’s more wasteful than cooking for a battalion when there are only three of you at home.

Grow your own veggies. You’d be surprised at how much you’d save if you grew your own tomatoes or basil. Think about it… you’ll be cooking with fresh vegetables and having a hobby at the same time!

Don’t leave out the leftovers. If you have a few leftover veggies from last night’s dinner, you can throw in some pasta and sauce, and turn it into a pasta dish.

Stir-fry veggies with a bit of meat if you want to make a quick and cheap dinner. It’s yummy and healthy.

With a bit of imagination and creativity, you’re sure to come up with ways to be wealthy and healthy at the same time.

I had a great time with my friends the other day. We were invited to cover an event and later we were treated to a sumptuous lunch by our gracious host. The dine-in area was spacious and can accommodate more than 50 people. The hunter ceiling fan was large enough to cool the area where we are seated. The food was superb. I love the big shrimps and stuffed crabs the most. I could have eaten more of those, but a single serving is enough to make me full. I’m going to look for its recipe on the internet and wish to achieve the same taste.

You love every bit of recipe you see on your cookbook or those prepared in your favorite cooking show. In fact, if you can, you would have loved to cook each and every one of them for you and your family to enjoy together. The only downside is you just lack the proper skill to dish out those delectable dishes from your kitchen. Cooking, as with every other skill, require constant practice. Watch as many cooking shows as you can and read as many cookbooks and food publications as you can and eventually you will get the hang of it. Do not forget to put those recipes to life and work in your kitchen. Start from simple dishes first and move on to the more complicated ones later on. I am sure you will be a good cook in no time, or at least be well enough to prepare food that your family will actually love. Otherwise, if you think you are a helpless case, you can always hire someone who has the skills to cook your meals for you. Just remember to do background checks before inviting someone into your house, right? And don’t forget that you also have to offer appealing compensation to your new house help, too.

(Should you be hiring an all-around help, make sure that she also knows how to properly care for Pre K Playground equipment as young kids are prone to get infection from unclean surfaces in play area.)

I woke up late last Sunday and had no time to prepare lunch, so I decided to order food at Max’s. I used the gift certificate given to us at the media launch of Max’s new promo. I called up Max’s hotline delivery and inquired if they will honor gift certificates for food delivery. There was some misunderstanding apparently because the manager was not informed by their main office that GC’s were given for their new promo. After some explanation and inquiries that she made to their main office, I finally made my order. They asked for my land line number and called me twice just to confirm my order. I understand the procedure though. It was a sort of background checks to make sure that we are not making fun or joke of it.

We had a wonderful lunch that day. The whole family enjoyed the sumptuous 4Sharing Meals! We had one whole, regular Fried Chicken, a bowl of piping hot Sinigang na baboy, four servings of rice, and four glasses of iced for lunch.

Summer is one perfect season for outdoor activities and fun family get-togethers and what food will always be present in any of those festivities? What else but juicy and tasty barbecues. It does not matter where you held these celebrations, barbecues are so handy and convenient, not to mention easy to prepare, too, that you can prepare it beforehand and store it in tight containers for long hours of out-of-town travels. You can also bring your own portable grill for an instant barbecue in the beach, or you can probably prepare them in a fire pit in the villa where your entire family is billeted. It does not even matter whether you prefer to barbecue lamb chops or pork chops or those huge lobsters or mouth-watering tuna bellies, just toss in a few tomatoes and other veggies, and some cheese, too, and I bet everyone will love the little feast you prepared. I know I would!

Here’s a list of natural cleaners I got from ivillage.com that will surely save you time and energy cleaning pots and pans and whatnots in the kitchen.

1. Apple peels. Boil apple peels in water until the stains on saucepans begins to lift. Allow the water to cool before you throw it and the peels. No need to rinse.

2. Distilled vinegar. Mix 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup distilled vinegar in a microwave-safe mug or bowl. Turn on the microwave for 2 minutes and wipe it clean.

3. Salt. Sprinkle salt on the mess brought by a broken egg on the kitchen floor. Leave it for 20 minutes and then wipe it right up.

4. Baking soda. Sprinkle baking soda on a damp sponge and scrub down the inside of your ref. Rinse the sponge and wipe down with fresh water.

5. Baking soda and vinegar are also best for cleaning mirrors including windshields for motorcycles, and for unclogging the drain.

6. Toothpaste. Rub a pea-sized amount of toothpaste using a slightly damp cloth to remove stubborn ring waters in dining table. Wipe off excess paste with a clean cloth.

Here’s one no-meat dish that you can prepare for the Holy Week. I have yet to try cooking this recipe, but I’m sure your kids will love it.

For the okoy:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 pack (8 g) Maggi Magic Sarap Seasoning
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp ground pepper
1 cup water
1 egg, beaten
3 cups green papaya, grated
1 cup togue (bean sprouts)
oil for frying
1/2 cup small shrimps for topping

For the dip:
1/2 cup vinegar
1/4 cup chopped onion
1 tsp sugar
1/4 cup Maggi Savor seasoning, Classic flavor
Combine all ingredients and mix well. Set aside.

For the okoy:
1. In a bowl, combine flour, Maggi Magic Sarap, salt and pepper.
2. Pour in water and beaten egg. Mix thoroughly to combine.
3. Add grated papaya and togue. Continue mixing until mixture is blended enough to be formed.
4. Form mixture into patties of desired size.
5. Heat oil. Top each uncooked patty with a few shrimps before frying.
6. Fry in hot oil until crispy and golden brown. Drain okoy on paper towels to remove excess oil.

Serve with vinegar dip on the side.
